Spontaneous Trip to Chicago and a Free Hotel Night in Raleigh

I know it’s been a little while since I posted last, so for all 3 of my readers (Hi Mom!  Hi Dad!  Hi Mrs. Guru!)….I apologize for my absence.  But I’m back with lots to share.  Stay tuned for a full report on our amazing trip to Turkey, Greece and Italy.  I posted some brief updates during the trip (one at the very beginning of the trip, after our first flight up to Chicago, one from Athens, and one from beautiful Santorini). Last week, I was up in New York City for a few days, staying in the New York Continue reading Spontaneous Trip to Chicago and a Free Hotel Night in Raleigh

Flights to Antigua from Charlotte – $271 roundtrip

If you’ve been dreaming of a Caribbean vacation, this deal to beautiful Antigua could be your answer.  United has dropped prices on flights to Antigua from Charlotte to as low as $271 roundtrip, which is an incredible price for such an exotic destination.  Flights are available between January and May, 2015, so this could be the perfect winter getaway.  The average high even in January and February is about 84°F (29°C) and the average low is about 72°F (22°C). The only negative to these flights is that on the outbound, the flights require an overnight layover in Newark.  So even Continue reading Flights to Antigua from Charlotte – $271 roundtrip

Flights to Norway and Sweden – $487 Roundtrip

Scandinavia is high on the list of places that the Mrs. Guru and I would like to travel – it’s a beautiful area of the world, and United has substantially dropped prices on flights to Norway and Sweden for this winter.  Flights from Newark to Oslo are as low as $487 and flights from Newark to Stockholm are slightly higher, at about $507. This sale is valid on United’s nonstop flights out of Newark, which is always nice to travel without connections.  Dates are a bit scattered from November, 2014 through March, 2014, but you can use Kayak or ITA Continue reading Flights to Norway and Sweden – $487 Roundtrip

Χαίρετε από την Ελλάδα! (Hello from Greece!)

Grand Bazaar

The Mrs. Guru and I are en route on our Greek adventure – we’re currently in a Lufthansa lounge at the Athens airport, waiting for our flight to Santorini.  I’ll be posting a full report on the whole trip after we get back, but wanted to post a quick update.  As you may have read, we left on Friday, flying up to Toronto (through Chicago), then from Toronto to Istanbul on Air Canada.  I had never actually been to Canada before, so since we had about a 4 1/2 hour layover, we hopped on a bus and headed into the Continue reading Χαίρετε από την Ελλάδα! Air Canada Executive First Cabin

Hello from Chicago!  The Mrs. Guru and I just completed the first leg of our next adventure…earlier this morning, we flew up from Greensboro, and have a relatively short layover here.  Our next stop is Toronto, where we have about 4 hours – just enough time to head into the city for a quick lunch.  From Toronto, we continue on an overnight flight to Istanbul, Turkey.  The Toronto to Istanbul flight will be about 10 hours long, so fortunately we were able to score seats in their Executive First Cabin:

The TSA Will Pay You to Fix Its Inefficiencies

Tired of long security lines at the airport?  How would you fix it?  The TSA is offering a total of $15,000 in rewards for the best ideas to improve airport security efficiency: The TSA will award one prize of at least $5,000 and others of at least $2,500 for the top ideas. Plus, the winner gets the satisfaction of knowing they’ve made the airline experience for those of the masses a little less of a headache. While everyone is quick to complain, it does take a complicated set of moving targets to factor into an idea: Contest participants must consider Continue reading The TSA Will Pay You to Fix Its Inefficiencies

Flights to San Francisco from Charlotte – $244 roundtrip

Act quickly on this one!  Delta has launched a “hub attack” on US Airways, with very low fares on flights to San Francisco and Los Angeles from Charlotte, NC (since Charlotte is one of US Airways’ big hubs).  These hub attacks usually only last for a few hours, and rarely more than a day or two. This is a great opportunity to get out to the west coast – the Mrs. Guru and I have taken several trips out to San Francisco and we really love the city.  The weather is tough to beat (but bring a jacket year-round…you never Continue reading Flights to San Francisco from Charlotte – $244 roundtrip

DC isn’t in the US Anymore, and Reminder of $30 Uber Promo Code

I just came across this story and had to share:  apparently, a DC man flying out of Orlando recently was asked to provide additional identification to security because the TSA Agent didn’t know that the District of Columbia was part of the United States: Gray, who lives in Washington, D.C., was flying out of Orlando International Airport when a TSA agent said Gray’s District of Columbia driver’s license wasn’t a valid form of identification. Gray said his license is legal and up-to-date, but the TSA agent didn’t seem to know what the District of Columbia was when Gray arrived at Continue reading DC isn’t in the US Anymore, and Reminder of $30 Uber Promo Code

Hilton Doubletree Charleston Downtown Historic District

Over Memorial Weekend, the Mrs. Guru and I spent a weekend at the Hilton Doubletree Charleston Downtown.  I had been holding onto 2 free weekend night certificates (which I earned from the Citi Hilton HHonors Reserve Card), and needed to put them to use.  The certificates are only valid for a year, and they would be expiring in early September.  With the retail rate over $400/night, it seemed to be a good use (I think standard rates are around $250/night, but rates seemed to be higher due to the holiday weekend). I called Hilton Reservations and checked availability for using Continue reading Hilton Doubletree Charleston Downtown Historic District
