You’ll want to act fast on this one – United has launched a sale on flights to Australia for under $550 roundtrip! This appears to be an attack on Delta, as most of the lowest fares are departing from Delta hubs (Atlanta, Minneapolis, Salt Lake City, and Detroit), and flights are available to Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane. Here’s an example of fares between Atlanta and Melbourne for July: You can search flexible dates on ITA Matrix, and book directly with United. If you book with United, you have 24 hours to cancel completely free of charge, so if you’re at Continue reading Roundtrip Flights to Australia: ~$550
United has launched a sale for flights to Las Vegas from Charlotte, NC for as low as $164 roundtrip. Vegas is definitely a destination where it’s tough to find flights returning on Sunday for a reasonable price (because everyone who goes to Vegas wants to go for a long weekend and fly home on Sunday, so airlines jack up Sunday flight prices), but if you can be a bit flexible with dates, it’s possible to find a reasonable itinerary with this sale. Fares are available through March and April, 2015 but dates are relatively sparse. Spring weather in Vegas is Continue reading Flights to Las Vegas from Charlotte: $164 roundtrip!
Hot on the heels of a deal I posted this morning for flights from Boston and Baltimore to Copenhagen, London, and Reykjavik for $99 each way, another sale has launched for flights to Helsinki, Finland, from a number of cities, including Charlotte, for as low as $666 roundtrip. United is attacking American Airlines/US Airways hubs, which include Phoenix, Dallas, Philadelphia, and Miami, and similar prices can be found from all of those cities. The best fares are available in late November, or from late December through late March:
American and US Airways have dropped prices on flights to San Jose, CA from Charlotte, NC to $288 roundtrip, and other airlines are matching the prices. San Jose is just south of San Francisco, and just north of the beautiful area of Monterrey and Carmel. The Mrs. Guru and I spent some time in Monterrey and Carmel in June, and it’s definitely worth the drive (about 2 hours from San Francisco, 1 hour and 15 minutes from San Jose). This sale is only valid for a pretty narrow range of dates in early December, but if you can make it Continue reading Flights to San Jose, CA from Charlotte – $285 roundtrip
As you probably have read, a few weeks ago, the Mrs. Guru and I took an incredible trip to Greece, with quick stops in Istanbul (on the outbound) and Milan (on the return). I’ve posted a few times with some details on how this trip came together, so I’ll summarize some of those points here, with links to more detail if you missed any of those discussions or want to refer back to them.
I started planning this trip last December, when United announced that they would be raising the cost of awards starting in February. Any trips booked before February 1, 2014 (even for travel after February) would be bookable at the old/lower prices, but after February 1, the prices would go up – for Business Class to Europe, United raised the price from 100,000 miles roundtrip to 140,000 miles roundtrip, so I definitely wanted to book before the 40% increase! I had only been to Greece once (for just a few days), and the Mrs. Guru had never been to Greece, so we decided that it would be a great destination. If you’ve been dreaming of a Caribbean vacation, this deal to beautiful Antigua could be your answer. United has dropped prices on flights to Antigua from Charlotte to as low as $271 roundtrip, which is an incredible price for such an exotic destination. Flights are available between January and May, 2015, so this could be the perfect winter getaway. The average high even in January and February is about 84°F (29°C) and the average low is about 72°F (22°C). The only negative to these flights is that on the outbound, the flights require an overnight layover in Newark. So even Continue reading Flights to Antigua from Charlotte – $271 roundtrip
Scandinavia is high on the list of places that the Mrs. Guru and I would like to travel – it’s a beautiful area of the world, and United has substantially dropped prices on flights to Norway and Sweden for this winter. Flights from Newark to Oslo are as low as $487 and flights from Newark to Stockholm are slightly higher, at about $507. This sale is valid on United’s nonstop flights out of Newark, which is always nice to travel without connections. Dates are a bit scattered from November, 2014 through March, 2014, but you can use Kayak or ITA Continue reading Flights to Norway and Sweden – $487 Roundtrip
Hello from Chicago! The Mrs. Guru and I just completed the first leg of our next adventure…earlier this morning, we flew up from Greensboro, and have a relatively short layover here. Our next stop is Toronto, where we have about 4 hours – just enough time to head into the city for a quick lunch. From Toronto, we continue on an overnight flight to Istanbul, Turkey. The Toronto to Istanbul flight will be about 10 hours long, so fortunately we were able to score seats in their Executive First Cabin:
In just about a week, the Mrs. Guru and I are headed off on another exciting adventure! We’re taking an 8 day trip to Greece, with a brief stop in Istanbul on the way over, and a brief stop in Milan on the way back. We’re both getting very excited about the trip – but while going through some final plan preparations, it occurred to me that I hadn’t had a chance to post about another really cool trick that allowed us to simultaneously book this trip to Greece along with an (almost) free flight to the Caribbean. Fair warning: Continue reading How We Scored an (Almost) Free Flight to the Cayman Islands
UPDATE: Unfortunately, the steps outlined below are no longer accurate. As of November 24, 2014, Aegean Airlines changed their Miles+Bonus program with Elite Status Requirements, now requiring 48,000 points for reaching Gold Status (unless you are able to fly 4 segments each year on Aegean Airlines, in which case you only need 24,000 points to reach Gold Status. This page will remain as a reference. Having elite status with an airline is one of those things that can seem difficult to attain, but the benefits that come with it can be extremely helpful. Little annoyances like checked baggage fees, long Continue reading United Gold Status for Life (Kinda, Sorta)
